Anna Somerville graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000 and works from her studio at Summerhall in Edinburgh.
Somerville is known for her expressive painterly style, and has been awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Blackadder & John Houston Travel Award (2000) and Anne Redpath Award for painting (2003).
This exhibition brings together a selection of recent paintings, described by Somerville as Paintscapes. The medium of paint along with a visceral approach to painting is at the heart of Somerville’s work, with each work emerging from an intuitive application of oil paint, raw pigment and mixed media. These works conjure up bold, atmospheric scapes that draw you into light filled spaces and invite you to look closer between the layers of paint. Somerville often revisits older paintings, working over them and allowing some of the past paintwork to show through into the new work. An example of this is in the painting ‘Waterfall’ which started life as a large scale figurative self portrait in 2004.
